About the Piatigorsky Archives Collection

The Piatigorsky Archives represent the personal collection of one of the great musical artists of the 20th century, cellist Gregor Piatigorsky (1903-1976). The Archives are located at The Colburn School, a performing arts school in Los Angeles, California.

 

The collection includes music manuscripts in Piatigorsky's own hand, treasured scores, recordings (commercial recordings, broadcasts, and test pressings), photographs, books, clippings, ephemera, programs, and documents including Piatigorsky's letters home while on tour, drafts of a novel and autobiography, and letters from the greatest performers and composers of the day including Heifetz, Casals, du Pré, Menuhin, Walton, Milhaud, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and many more.
